About me
I began my career in illustration at Cleveland Institute of Art, and then continued my education at Memphis College of Art and Design. I completed two years before focusing on raising my four children. During this time, I continued to immerse myself in art. The National gallery of Art and Freer Museum were powerful influences. The masterful simplicity of Sargent, the compositions of Degas, and the sensitivity of Dewing, along with modern masters such as Nelson Shanks and Robert Liberace introduced me to Realism.
Realism has an ability to speak all languages; to move freely through all cultures, ages and genders. It is a powerful language understood by all.
I use objects, light, gesture and composition to tell a story. My paintings incorporate broader perspectives and symbolism. As a painter, my goal is to express the "inner eye", and to give my audience an intimate sense of what lies beneath the surface. It is my hope that strength in all its manifestations inspires.
In “Mighty Hayley”, a small, yet strongly lit woman is surrounded by the machines she uses. “Danny, Champion of the World” is dedicated to the strength of overcoming a disability and negativity. "Lion Heart" represents the strength of youth facing the unknown future. “The Hourglass”, symbolizes the strength to live with regret and social pressure.
I creatively incorporate light and shadow for composition and interest, but also as part of the narrative. My use of color is diverse and the contrast of light and dark play a central role in in the mood of my paintings.
My purpose in painting is to keep my subjects rich with meaning and truth.
